2018 was a great year, and we are ready to kick off an even better 2019. We rung in the New Year with Quarry guests, friends and family.
Happy New Year From Mystic Quarry
The best way to spend New Year’s Eve! Singer/songwriter Robert Cannon Music and his band played from 8:30 pm until 12:30 am. The night ended with a firework finale and a complimentary champagne toast to celebrate the end of 2018 and to look forward to a divine 2019.
Our Winter Texans Ringing in the New Year!
A special thank you to everyone that joined us on this special evening.
Getting Back to Nature
While you can always go stargazing here on our sky deck or on a walk to the top of our 'mystic' quarry, the New Braunfels Astronomy Club holds Star Parties at the Tye Preston Memorial Library here in Canyon Lake. After a short presentation of current celestial happenings, view the night sky with the Ravenstar Observatory’s telescope.
You are also welcome to bring your own telescope to set up on library grounds or here at Mystic Quarry. This month’s Star Party will be on January 26 from 7 – 9pm.
Guadalupe River Trout Fishing
The Guadalupe River below Canyon Lake Dam is one of the top 100 trout fishing streams in the US with fly fishing for Rainbow and Brown trout occurring year-round.
Peak season for trout fishing is mid-November through late May; however, the season can extend as long as water is released from the dam, keeping the Guadalupe River under 70 degrees. The river is stocked each winter by Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited (GRTU) and Texas Parks & Wildlife (TPWD) at several different release locations. There are many fishing trips and guided tours with year-round free access at Guadalupe Park. This February 22 – 24 will be the annual Troutfest hosted at Lazy L&L Campground. Mystic Quarry will have a booth in the main tent (please come and visit us) and our overnight guests will get a free shuttle ride to and from the event. For current fishing conditions, you can start your search at Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited and Texas Parks & Wildlife.
Did you know the Canyon Lake area is a great place to hunt for fossils? You can begin your search by going on a tour to Canyon Gorge. Although you can’t take fossils from the Gorge, you will be able to see dinosaur footprints and other treasures exposed by flood erosion in 2002. The Heritage Museum of Texas Hill Country is another stop for natural history (and Hill Country history).
Once you know what to look for, keep a close eye out for prehistoric treasures on your local hikes. The fossils in the photo found above were found at Mystic Quarry – see what you can find on your own hunt. Chances are you will be able to take home your own Texas Heart!
Live Music Venues
If live music is your gig, Gruene Hall - Texas’ oldest dance hall, has shows 7 nights a week with added shows on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, many of which are free.
Gruene Hall was built in 1878 and has been in continuous operation ever since. Most of the building has remained relatively unchanged, but we appreciate the added modern conveniences of electricity and indoor plumbing. A full calendar for 2019, show prices and ticket sales can be found at Gruene Hall.
Devil's Backbone Tavern
The Devil's Backbone Tavern in Fischer is a 1930’s honkey tonk with a lot of history. Starting off as a blacksmith and stagecoach stop, it became a service station and dancehall in the 1950’s.
The Tavern has become a hot spot over the years. Popular enough to have it's own ballad. It has been a filming location for a couple of movies and is a hub for paranormal researchers. All that aside, it has a shuffleboard table for weekly tournaments so you can’t beat that!
Group Events at Mystic Quarry
Planning a wedding, corporate event or family reunion? Mystic Quarry is a great venue for all.
Our new 30 x 40’ pavilion was completed this past October and it's woodsy location promises an event that will be unforgettable.
The pavilion has water and electricity, good Wi-Fi, is surrounded by 11 power and water tent camping sites and 11 more primitive camp sites. We are adding a concrete floor before the next guest wedding event planned in April. Also, available to rent is a recreation hall and fully equipped kitchen. Combined with our indoor accommodations, the beautiful outdoor setting and our recreation hall, Mystic Quarry provides a “one stop shop” for hosting your event. Please call us at 830-964-3330 for dates, rates, and booking.
Our Mystic Quarry Winter Texans
We are continuing to be a home away from home for a lively group of Winter Texans! If you’ve visited Mystic Quarry, you'll see the Winter Texans love for the walking trails and nature path as they are maintained by our Winter Texans. You’ll never get lost if you follow their handmade trail marker cairns and stone-lined paths! Winter Texans also keep up our flower garden on the property. Added into their busy schedule are few day trips each month to neighboring cities like San Antonio, Gruene, and Kerrville.
Our Winter Texans are also volunteering their time in service to the local community. Christmas cookies were baked and brought to the local Fire Stations, they made and served breakfast for local Heroes on the Water event on the Guadalupe and are participating in a fundraiser for the local Community Resource and Recreation Center (CRRC).
If you are into hiking, ask any of our Winter Texans the best places to go; hiking the Madrone Trail is one of their favorites.
Save the Date ...
Spring is one of our favorite times of the year at Mystic Quarry. We still have indoor accommodations and plenty of RV spots available, so come share your Spring Break with us!
The legendary Willie Nelson will be back in town and playing at the Whitewater Amphitheater on April 12 and 13, and we will be offering our guest shuttle service to and from the venue for $10 a person. We recommend booking as soon as possible as accommodations fill up very quickly.
Also, coming to Whitewater in May is the Avett Brothers and Dwight Yoakum.
Our second Annual Pints ‘n Pups (PnP) will be held on June 1, 2019 (yes, we moved it from April 27th). Keep an eye out on our Instagram and Facebook feeds for more information. It’s a fun event that really helps our friends, furry and otherwise at the Comal County Sherriff K9 Unit.
We hope you will be able to spend time with us here at Mystic Quarry and enjoy the many activities around the local area to make your stay fun-filled and memorable. We like to think of Mystic Quarry as a microcosm of the qualities you want in a community: friendship, family and good memories tucked in a vibrant landscape!
