South by Southwest (SXSW) – Music and More

South by Southwest (or just “south by” if you want to sound super hip) is a 10-day event in Austin, Texas featuring some big-name speakers, comedians, musical artist, networking events, exhibitions and tons of unique entertainment. And no, it has nothing to do with the airline company. The first SXSW event was held in 1986 to highlight talented Austin musicians and help put them on the map.

Since the 80’s the festival has exploded in both size and scope. This event not only celebrates art of many different varieties from all around the world, but also focuses on innovative thinking and human connection. There are tons of events going on each day, morning until night, check out the complete list here. But, we still believe music is the reason and there is said to be over 2,000 performers this year- Can’t leave you hanging; the performance list is right here.

Let’s narrow this down a bit: Our Mystic Quarry staff picks for must see music include The Deer a lovely, unique indie folk band from Austin. Give them a listen here.

Broncho is an up and coming, fun indie rock band out of Oklahoma. Listen to their breakout hit “Class Historian” here.

You’ll want to catch Nordista Freeze for some feel-good, modern meets classic rock. Check them out here, kinda beach boy-esque, right?!

SXSW also offers free events like film screenings, perusing the wellness expo and concerts on the outdoor stage at Lady Bird Lake from March 19-21st.

If you are attending the full 10-day event, you’ll probably want to stay in Austin, but if you are catching a show, or two, Mystic Quarry can be the perfect place to stay for some peace and quiet! Maybe we will catch you at one of the shows!
