Honey Bees with Pollen

The Latest Buzz at Mystic Quarry

“Bees do have a smell, you know, and if they don't they should, for their feet are dusted with spices from a million flowers.”

― Ray Bradbury

Summer honey, a gift from the bees, flows at Mystic Quarry. This June we had our second honey harvest and were blessed with 4 gallons of the sweet, sticky stuff. It tastes fantastic!

We had a couple touch-and-go moments with our hives this past year after losing our queen twice due to inclement weather. Luckily, queens can be mail order and expedited – you read that correctly, a mail-order bride for our hive. Ours came from an apiary located in California. She arrived in a little tiny queen box surrounded by her own “queen’s court”. Each box is placed inside the hive during the transfer process. The bees eat their way through a sugar barrier to release their new queen, all the while becoming accustom to her pheromones enabling acceptance by the beehive. It takes 2 to 5 days to set her free and she will immediately start laying eggs to replenish the hive with new worker bees. It only takes 2 to 6 weeks in the summer months to lose a queen-less hive. That is why we check on our bees every 2 to 3 weeks.

And the good news: We still have some honey left for purchase, come on by!

Aqua-Brew, Texas Beer Company, Guadalupe Brewing Company and 5 Stones Artisan Brewery brought some uniquely flavored brews for tasting, while Tipsy Cow Ice Cream, alcohol-infused ice cream, and Road Dogs NB, gourmet hot dog food truck, brought tasty treats to eat. It was great to have Two Tons of Steel (a Texas legend) and Robert Cannon play some wonderful music for all of us to enjoy. We certainly appreciated everyone who came out to share the day and all the vendors (Newberry Landscaping and Remarkable K9) who helped make this a success.
